A multi-device passkey allows you more flexibility in signing in to your NFID Wallet. There are two types of multi-device passkeys:
- One that’s secured with your device manufacturer, like Apple’s iCloud keychain or Google’s Password Manager
- One you carry with you, like a YubiKey USB dongle
Multi-device type | Advantages | Disadvantages |
Device manufacturer (i.e. Apple, Google, Microsoft) | Convenient | Manufacturer trust |
External security key (i.e. YubiKey, Ledger) | Trust only yourself | Harder to manage |
We recommend creating a multi-device passkey with the device manufacturer for most. Our research has given no reason to doubt the security of a passkey stored in the iCloud Keychain or similar manufacturer storage solution.
Creating a multi-device passkey from a computer
If you’ve already created a multi-device passkey on your mobile device, you will only be able to create a second multi-device passkey on a USB security key like a YubiKey or Ledger.
From the security page of your NFID Wallet, click on the “Create passkey” button. You’ll see a slightly different window depending on your browser and operating system.
